India’s Index of Industrial Production rose 6.7% year on year in September 2026, with manufacturing and electricity offsetting a contraction in mining, according to MoSPI’s quick estimate.
The headline index reached 124.3, up from 116.5 a year earlier. Manufacturing grew 7.6% and electricity and gas supply advanced 11.2%, while mining and quarrying fell 6.2%. Water supply, sewerage and waste management grew 5.8%.
Capital and intermediate goods were strongest
Intermediate goods expanded 12.2% and capital goods 10.4%. Infrastructure and construction goods grew 7.2%, primary goods 4.0%, consumer durables 6.0% and consumer non-durables only 1.4%.
Seventeen of 23 manufacturing groups recorded growth. Electrical equipment rose 33.9%, rubber and plastics 19.9%, and motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers 19.0%.
The uneven picture
The data show strong factory momentum, but not a uniformly broad acceleration. Mining remained a drag, pharmaceuticals contracted 8.9%, and wearing apparel fell 5.2%. The modest gain in consumer non-durables also suggests softer momentum in everyday consumption-oriented production.
For April-September, overall industrial output grew 6.8%. Manufacturing increased 7.5%, while mining declined 2.4%, reinforcing the split between factory activity and extractive output.
September figures are quick estimates and may be revised as more source data arrive.
