The Sensex rose 482.92 points, or 0.66%, to close at 73,607 on Monday 26 October 2026, and the Nifty 50 gained 153.20 points, or 0.68%, to settle at 22,753, according to Business Standard and ANI reports. It was a choppy session that recovered from morning lows. Spectate Media has not seen exchange data and relies on those reports. Business Standard's headline gives the Nifty as 23,753, which is a typo; its body says 22,753.20.
Breadth and sectors
The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 1.19% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 1.38%, and 37 of the 50 Nifty stocks gained, per Business Standard. Nifty Metal led with a 2.2% gain and Nifty Pharma rose 1.67%, though the same report's summary says pharma rose nearly 2%. FMCG, media, consumer durables and chemicals closed lower. Among Nifty stocks, Dr Reddy's, JSW Steel and Adani Ports gained, while Shriram Finance, Tata Consumer, Bajaj Finance and HDFC Life lost ground.
Stocks in the news
Ather Energy hit an intraday high of ₹1,623, up 17.6%, after a second-quarter turnaround. Indian Overseas Bank rose nearly 6% after net profit grew 56% to ₹1,912 crore. On the Sensex, Eternal, Adani Ports, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Trent, Tata Steel and Bharti Airtel gained, while Bajaj Finance, HDFC Bank, Maruti Suzuki, HCL Tech and Power Grid fell. Infosys fell about 3% in early trade, per India TV, and was listed among NSE gainers at the close.
Crude and the rupee
Brent crude was about $114.65 a barrel and the rupee about ₹95.19 to the dollar at the time of ANI's report, which also gives a separate crude figure of about $101.07 without naming the benchmark. Analyst Vikram Kasat said elevated crude and a weaker rupee continue to pose risks to inflation, corporate margins and foreign investor flows. Vipin Dixena put Nifty support near 22,300 to 22,400 and resistance near 22,700 to 22,800, and said it is too early to conclude a durable bottom is in. Neither report gives FII or DII flows.

What boards and CFOs should note
Three points. First, the gain follows a week in which the Sensex fell 2.1%, so one session does not change the trend. Second, small and midcaps outpaced the headline indices. Third, crude and the rupee remain the swing factors for margins. Not investment advice.
