SEBI gives margin relief on trades funded by early pay-in of shares, up to the value of securities already handed over

Clearing corporations will not collect margin on a client's later cash-segment trades to that extent. One report gives 22 February 2027 as the effective date.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has allowed margin relief for clients who hand over shares through early pay-in (EPI) before settlement, according to reports dated 22 October 2026. Early pay-in means delivering the securities to the clearing corporation ahead of the settlement date. Spectate Media has not seen the circular and relies on a summary of Mint and Economic Times reports and on a second syndicated report.

What changes

Clearing corporations will not collect margin from trading or clearing members on a client's later buy or sell positions in the cash segment, up to the value of securities for which EPI was accepted. They apply this in real time. The relief applies when the client has a net sell obligation in a settlement and the clearing corporation has accepted the EPI request.

How it is calculated

On the trade date, the EPI value available is the lower of the value of securities for which EPI was made and the value of securities sold. If a client takes a same-day cash position using that benefit, the clearing corporation reduces the eligible EPI value when it assesses margin. If the client squares off the sale, the EPI benefit is removed, and any margin shortfall is blocked from the member's own collateral. Trade-for-trade securities, which settle on a gross basis, are excluded from the shortfall condition.

Dates and gaps

The syndicated report gives no effective date, while the Indian Opinion summary gives 22 February 2027 without explaining the gap, so treat that date as unconfirmed. Neither source gives the circular number. Reports say the decision followed proposals from the Broker ISF and the Risk Management Review Committee, and Indian Opinion says that committee had discussed it since July.

Key numbers

  • Circular date: 22 October 2026 (Per reports)
  • Reported effective date: 22 February 2027 (One report; not in the other)
  • Margin relief limit: Lower of two values (EPI value or value sold)
  • Excluded from shortfall rule: Trade-for-trade (Gross-settled securities)

What boards and CFOs should note

Three points stand out. First, brokers should need to fund less upfront margin for reinvestment by clients who sell. Second, members must keep their risk systems able to check margins on fresh positions. Third, the effective date should be checked against the circular.
