Indian equity indices fell for a third straight session on Thursday, 22 October 2026, as crude oil climbed. The Sensex closed at 73,249.39, down 460.30 points or 0.62%, and the Nifty 50 at 22,687.65, down 123.70 points or 0.54%, according to Business Standard and IANS. The Sensex fell as much as 705 points during the day and the Nifty touched 22,555, Upstox reported.

Broader market

The Nifty Midcap 100 fell 0.87%. The Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 1.17% in Business Standard's headline summary and 1.14% in a later section of the same article, so the exact figure is uncertain. Business Standard and IANS say IT, FMCG and media were the biggest decliners, with media the weakest, while Nifty Pharma rose the most. Another report lists Bajaj Finance, Cipla, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Auto and ICICI Bank among Nifty gainers. Reports of the biggest Nifty losers differ: Business Standard names Nestle India, Eternal and HDFC Life Insurance, while another lists Nestle India, HDFC Life and others. Neither gives percentages.

Why markets fell

Business Standard says higher oil prices raised inflation concerns, with Brent up about 3% at $112.5 a barrel. Upstox puts Brent as high as $112.67, a four-month high, and cites Houthi strikes on Saudi Aramco's Shaybah oilfield, which reportedly killed two workers, and reports that the US could strike Iran after its midterm elections. Asian indices closed down 2.5% to 3.5%, according to Business Standard. The rupee fell to about 94.81 to 94.82 a dollar, from about 94.46, in two reports. Flows data were not reported for the day.
