Foreign portfolio investors net sold ₹47,417 crore of Indian equities between 1 and 12 October 2026, according to an Angel One News report updated on 14 October. That is more than the ₹35,861 crore they sold in the whole of September, by about 32% on the report's figures.

The year so far

The report cites Business Standard for net selling of about ₹3.08 trillion in the first nine months of 2026, against ₹1.66 trillion in all of 2025. NSDL data in the same report shows net sales of ₹3.64 trillion in the secondary market through 12 October. The report does not explain why the two year-to-date figures differ, so readers should treat them as measured on different bases.

In new issues the picture is different. Foreign investors were net buyers of ₹56,485 crore in the primary market over the same period.

Index and domestic flows

The Sensex is down 15.60% and the Nifty 50 is down 14.4% in 2026. Domestic institutional investors put in a net ₹6.83 trillion this year, against ₹7.88 trillion in 2025 and ₹5.26 trillion in 2024.

Reasons cited

The report lists five: rising US bond yields, with the 10-year Treasury yield recently above 5.2%; global money moving into AI-related stocks; Brent crude testing $100 a barrel amid the West Asia war; a weaker rupee; and Indian valuations that remain high against expected earnings growth. It gives no weekly or sector-wise breakdown, and it names no analyst.

Key numbers

  • October 1–12 net selling: ₹47,417 cr (vs ₹35,861 cr in September)
  • 2026 net selling: ₹3.08 trn (vs ₹1.66 trn in all of 2025)
  • Primary market: +₹56,485 cr (Net buying in new issues)
  • Sensex in 2026: −15.60% (Nifty 50 −14.4%)

What boards and CFOs should note

Three points stand out. First, the pace of selling in October is faster than in September. Second, primary-market buying shows foreign money is still taking part in new listings even as it exits the secondary market, which matters for companies planning issues. Third, domestic buying has absorbed a large part of the selling, but at ₹6.83 trillion it is below last year's level.
