India's services output grows in 17 of 19 tracked sectors

MoSPI's trial services-production series showed broad-based growth in August, with 13 tracked sectors recording double-digit expansion.

India's formal services economy recorded growth across 17 of the 19 sub-sectors tracked by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation in August 2026. Thirteen of those sub-sectors posted double-digit year-on-year growth, indicating that the expansion was spread across much of the measured services base rather than resting on a small number of activities.

The figures come from MoSPI's Index of Services Production trial series. The ministry introduced the series to provide a monthly measure of short-term changes in formal services activity, an area that previously had fewer high-frequency official indicators than manufacturing and other goods-producing sectors.

The trial index covers 19 sub-sectors

MoSPI says the series tracks 19 services sub-sectors and covers approximately 60% of India's services economy. The ministry uses 2024–25 as the base year and releases monthly readings with a lag of about 60 days.

The August result therefore provides a broad directional view of formal activity, but it is not a complete measure of every service produced in India. Businesses outside the index's coverage and informal activity are not fully represented. The trial status also matters because the methodology and coverage may be refined as the series develops.

Growth was broad but not universal

Seventeen of 19 tracked sub-sectors expanded from a year earlier. Thirteen registered double-digit growth, while two failed to record growth. The available release summary does not identify those two sectors or provide every sub-sector's individual growth rate.

That limitation means the headline cannot by itself show where momentum strengthened or weakened, nor whether the fastest-growing activities carry the greatest weight in the overall index. Boards should separate the breadth count from the contribution of each sector when detailed tables are available.

A new monthly signal for service businesses

The regular index gives companies a more frequent official benchmark for comparing their own volumes, pricing and capacity use with broader activity. The approximately 60-day release lag makes it more useful for confirmation and planning than for real-time monitoring.

For lenders and investors, the series can add context to company disclosures from transport, communication, hospitality, financial and other service businesses. It should still be read alongside employment, credit, tax and company-level operating data because no single index captures demand, margins and cash generation together.

Key numbers

  • Sub-sectors tracked: 19
  • Sub-sectors recording growth: 17
  • Sub-sectors with double-digit growth: 13
  • Approximate services-economy coverage: 60%
  • Base year: 2024–25

What boards and CFOs should note

  • Does the company's own August volume growth align with the 17-of-19 breadth shown by the official series?
  • Which detailed sub-sector weights and rates explain the aggregate direction when MoSPI's tables are reviewed?
  • How should a roughly 60-day reporting lag be combined with faster internal demand and collection indicators?
